Get to Know the Nebelung: The Enigmatic Feline

Discover the Exotic Serengeti Cat

Meet the Nebelung, a rare and delightful cat breed with a mystique as unique as its shimmering silver fur.

  • First bred in the 1980s, the Nebelung is closely related to the Russian Blue but stands out with its semi-longhaired coat.
  • These affectionate ‘shoulder cats’ are known for their dog-like loyalty, often shadowing their owners throughout the house.
  • Despite their elegance, Nebelungs are approachable and highly trainable, displaying intelligence and a gentle demeanor.
  • Though not recognized by the CFA, this breed’s unique charm and rarity make it a prized find for cat enthusiasts.

The Nebelung cat, with its stunning silver-blue coat, is a fairly recent addition to the feline world, having been first bred in the ’80s in the United States. Named ‘creature of the mist,’ these cats are reminiscent of the Russian Blue but sport a distinctive, long fluffy coat that sets them apart. Yet, they remain a rare find, making them a coveted companion for those in the know.

Standing at about 9 to 13 inches in height and weighing between 7 to 15 pounds, the Nebelung boasts a lifespan of 15 to 18 years. Its beautiful blue coat tipped with silver adds to its air of mystery and elegance. Perfect for families who are often home, they thrive on companionship and are ideal for those seeking a loving, trainable pet.

Nebelungs are celebrated for their affectionate, mild-mannered nature. With an easy-going demeanor, they imprint on their favorite humans and often perch quietly across their shoulders. Although likened to dogs due to their loyalty, they don’t cope well in busy environments and prefer calm, familiar settings. Their shyness may deter them from strangers, but their loyalty to their family is unwavering.

This breed gets along well with other pets if socialized early. Their gentle nature means they don’t handle conflict well but often coexist peacefully when introduced to other cats or calm dogs. For families with older children, the Nebelung is a loving companion in need of a peaceful environment and consistent companionship.

Owning a Nebelung might involve a bit of a search as they’re relatively unknown in the US, and not being recognized by the CFA doesn’t make the hunt any easier. Imported from Europe or the UK, these kittens can carry a hefty price tag of about $1,200, excluding import fees. Nevertheless, finding one in a shelter or as an ex-show cat, though rare, is not impossible.

Nebelungs, with their magical charm and devoted nature, make a unique and loving addition to any household, offering companionship that’s both serene and endearing.
